Natural habitat and growing conditions:
Native to tropical rainforests of eastern Brazil, this species grows best with medium light levels and warm, humid conditions. It is damaged by temperatures below 60 °F.Notes of interest:
- The lighter-green areas of the leaf are actually translucent and the dark-green regions on the upper surface of the leaf are purple on the lower side of the leaf. When viewed from below, the leaves look like stained glass windows, giving it the common name "cathedral windows".
- As with all Calathea species, this plant folds its leaves vertically at night, returning them to horizontal the next day.
